Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire – A Coastal Town with Industry, Culture & Waterside Charm.

Milford Haven is one of Pembrokeshire’s largest towns, set along the deep, sheltered waters of the Milford Haven Waterway. Once a busy fishing port and naval dockyard, the town has evolved into a unique mix of industry, creativity, and tourism. With a rich maritime past, scenic walks, local businesses, and a strong sense of community, Milford is a place full of stories – and a lot more going on than meets the eye.

Founded in the late 18th century, Milford Haven was originally built to support whaling and merchant shipping. Its deep natural harbour, one of the finest in the world, quickly attracted attention and played a major role in British maritime trade. The town later became a hub for fishing and oil, with the waterfront shaping much of its industrial identity. While these industries still exist, the town today is also focused on culture, tourism, and local enterprise.

At the heart of Milford is the Marina and Milford Waterfront – a redeveloped quayside area filled with independent shops, cafés, art galleries, and restaurants, many with views across the water. It’s a lovely spot for a stroll, a bite to eat, or a bit of shopping, and it regularly hosts events, festivals, and seasonal markets. There’s also a growing creative scene, with local artists, makers, and studios calling Milford home.

For those interested in history, the Milford Haven Museum, housed in the town’s oldest building, tells the story of its naval past, whaling fleets, and more. A short walk away, you’ll find Torch Theatre – a respected performing arts venue offering drama, comedy, cinema, and community events all year round.

Nature lovers will enjoy walking the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which runs through the town and offers spectacular views of the estuary and surrounding countryside. There are also boat trips available from the marina, giving visitors a chance to see the haven from the water – and maybe even spot some seals and seabirds along the way.

Milford has a population of around 13,000, making it a busy hub for the south of the county. The town centre includes high street shops, essential services, supermarkets, schools, and a variety of small businesses serving both locals and visitors. Transport links are strong too, with a train station offering direct links to Swansea and Cardiff, and bus routes connecting the town to other parts of Pembrokeshire.

Whether you’re visiting for a day out by the water, a spot of shopping, or to catch a show, Milford Haven is a town with depth – both literally and in character. It’s a place where the sea meets the community, and where old industry and new ideas come together.
